Very Rare IXL Side Hammer Navy Model Percussion Revolver

Manufacturer: Ixl
Model: Navy
Type: Revolver
Gauge: 36
Barrel: 5 inch octagon
Finish: blue
Grip: walnut
Stock:
Item Views: 700
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 223
Class: Antique
Description:

The only markings on the gun other than serial numbers are "CS" on the front of the frame and "C" on the right side of the frame under the grip. Like the IXL pocket model side hammer revolver, the Navy has engraving only on the hammer and trigger guard. The serial number probably reflects the actual production of this revolver as this is the highest of the three known. The five shot cylinder is contoured like the Adams revolver from England and the operation is identical. The manufacturer has not been identified. "IXL" which is found on some of the pocket models is probably a trade name used to disguise the origin from Samuel Colts' agents. There are no proofmarks. The "T.C.R" which has been stamped on the sides of the barrel and both grips is thought to have been added by an owner. The old reblue has a red tinge on the frame. The front sight is an iron blade integral with a large dovetail base. The rear sight is a groove in the top strap. The loading lever has a friction latch.

Rating Definition:

Retains most of the old reblue, mixed with light pitting. The wood is fine. The action is sticky but functional. PICTURED American Percussion Revolvers, p. 78, Flayderman, 7A-041 PROVENANCE Russell Goldstein, Bourne auction 1970, FS 1970
