Description:

This is an excellent example of an original unaltered "fully automatic" Colt M1921 Thompson Submachine gun. These early guns were the quintessential classic submachine gun that was used during the depression era "Gangland" warfare through out the United States and eventually became of the mainstay weapon of early law enforcement and FBI agencies. Ultimately they were adopted by the Military and used in the Nicaragua Campaign and again in WWII in a later "M1A1" war expedient configuration. This particular gun was manufactured very early on in the original Colt production with a four digit serial number noted to fall within a small serial numbered group of weapons sold the Canadian Mounted Police. It is estimated that only approximately 15, 000 sets of 1921 parts were produced with almost all of those parts being later used to produced the more successful later M1928A1 configuration, making these early 1921 SMGs a very scarce weapon. The left side of the receiver is marked "MODEL OF 1921" / the serial number "1057" and farther back on the receiver it has the correct 4-5 line markings of "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN, / CALIBRE 45 AUTOMATIC COLT CARTRIDGE, / MANUFACTURED BY / COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN. U.S.A." The right side is marked "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION / NEW YORK U.S.A." with the five line patent dates farther forward, along with the circled "JHB" inspectors mark of Major John Barret's, directly behind the ejection port. The left side of the lower receiver assembly is correctly marked with "AUTOMATIC" and SEMI-AUTOMATIC" along with "FIRE and SAFE" markings behind that . This model would be considered an "A" model which identifies it as a standard grade without the patented "CUTTS" compensator on the end of the barrel, which is correct for these early models. These early production SMGs are very distinctive in that they have the desirable early finned barrel (to aid in cooling when firing in a full-automatic mode), the fully adjustable Lyman tangent rear sight with sight protectors that is graduated from 100-600 yards, the walnut vertical foregrip, detachable walnut buttstock with the butt trap which holds an original Thompson oiler. The gun is fully complete with a multitude of accessories to include: one blued 50rd Drum magazine, two Parkerized military style 50rd Drum magazines, six blued 20 round stick magazines (all of which are marked on the back) three are early Colt versions that have just the patent dates, two are marked "Auto Ordnance" and one is marked "Seymour Products Co", two cleaning rods one a early steel version and one the later brass version, an original "Thompson" Auto-Ordnance instruction manual, a Super RARE FBI carrying case that houses the SMG and accessories and a very desirable set of spare parts. The spares consist of several ejectors, two extractors, a spare take pin, several springs, and a brass "H-Piece" (rate reducer), all required to make this weapon "Rock and Roll" at the range.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with approximately 97% of the bright original factory blue finish remaining just showing some light wear, spotting and thinning on both the upper and lower edges of the receiver, (more so on the right side) and the lower edges of the triggerguard with some browning and loss of finish in the area directly behind the pistol grip. There is also some thinning and minor blue loss on the sides and top edges of the rear sight protector as well as some of the general edges and high spots overall. It appears that the SMG has been fired very little as the breech face shows only light firing use and the wear is attributable to only light handling. The foregrip and buttstock both show excellent finish with light handling marks and scratches. The various accessories are all in excellent condition with 98% of the metal finishes and the carrying case is also in excellent condition showing minor handling marks overall. Just a super condition very early 1921 Thompson SMG that is complete with a large assortment of accessories.
