Description:

This is a nice example of what we believe to be a late WWII M1911A1 pistol. Factory employee produced sample or presentation pistol as produced by the Ithaca Gun Company. We believe that this may have been one of the left over WWI Colt frames that was reclaimed by the Ithaca Gun Company, that were subsequently finish machined into M1911A1 pistols. This pistol is completely void of the normal factory markings and proofs except for a small letter "G" by the disconnector hole and a letter "H" by the right rear, lower section of the trigger guard bow. Both of these are typical Colt Government order and provisional proof marks. These are also known as "Lunch Box" pistols, a term that was coined by collectors as a way to explain what these unmarked pistols are and the theory is that they were removed form the factory one piece at a time in someone's lunch box and assembled at home. The pistol appears to have been completely machined but it does show some unusual machined areas around the ejection port which may have caused the parts to be rejected and allowed them to be removed from the factory. Currently it has all the late war parts that include the serrated slide stop, checkered thumb safety, narrow hammer with checkered spur, long grip safety, and serrated mainspring housing. These are features usually found on pistols produced after 1943/44. The barrel is a early WWI contract barrel that is marked with a stacked "S and P" proof on the left side of the lug and the grips are late war Keyes-Fibre versions with the reinforcing ribs inside, a star with the letter "K" inside on each grip, and the narrow reinforcing rings around the grip screws. It is complete with one blued magazine that is marked with an R on the front of the base plate and a GI style cardboard box that is unmarked except for a very light pencil markings on the lid that read Sept, 28-44 and under that July 15-1953. .

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus overall with 99.0% of the original gray parkerized finish with minor edge and high spot wear with some wear and scratches on top of the barrel in the chamber area. The grips are in excellent condition. The box is in good condition as the lid has been detached from the bottom. Research is needed on this very interesting original WWII M1911A1 Pistol.
