Description:

One of an estimated 5000 Army Model percussion revolvers manufactured by the Rodgers & Spencer Company of Willow Dale, New York for a U.S. Ordnance contract issued in November 1864. The Rodgers & Spencer revolvers were delivered too late to be issued during the Civil War and were sold as surplus. The well designed, six-shot, solid frame revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder. The loading lever, hammer and trigger have a casehardened finish. The two-piece walnut grips have an oil finish. The top of the frame is marked: "RODGERS & SPENCER/UTICA N.Y. on either side of the sighting groove. The serial number, "3133" is located on the cylinder, the lower left side of the frame, on the butt and on the top of loading lever. All of the serial numbers match. Small "B" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. The lower portion of the left grip is stamped with the Ordnance inspector's script initials "RPB" in a rectangle.

Rating Definition:

Near excellent. The revolver appears to be unfired and has no flash pitting on the percussion nipples, cylinder or hammer. The finish has flaked; approximately 75% of the original high polish blue finish remains intact. Most of the flaking is concentrated on the cylinder, the top of the frame and the sides of the barrel. The case-hardened loading lever and hammer retain 100% of the dove-gray case-hardened finish. All markings are very sharp. The grips are in excellent condition. The inspection marks are extremely crisp and the grips have minimal handling and storage wear. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a very good example of a well-designed, high quality, Civil War percussion revolver.
