Description:

Barrel top is marked "NEW HAVEN CONN. / PATENT FEB 14, 1854" indicating that the pistol was manufactured after Volcanic's re-organization in April 1857 and the formation of the New Haven Arms Company. The company was formed to continue production of the former Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. These pistols were produced in 30 caliber and used the same basic frame as the original Volcanic. The serial number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip panel and each grip panel is stamped with the matching serial number. The grips are varnished smooth walnut. Production of these scarce pistols ran from 1857 to 1860 with only 850 made in the 3 1/2 inch barrel. Complete in a much later production leather case with green felt lining, an extra spring, a tool and a cleaning rod. The tool does attach to the cleaning rod. Unknown what the tool is for.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The metal surfaces have a crisp original smooth gray mottled patina. The frame has an aged patina. There is a little minor pitting on the barrel and some scattered minor dings on the frame. "W. S. Choate" is crudely scratched on the butt. The grips are fine with most of the original varnish remaining, smooth flattening on the bottoms and scattered minor dings, scuffs and dents. Needs a little work, the lever sags a little when the pistol is held up. The action is otherwise fine. The barrel marking is clear. The case is good with some heavy edge wear. The loop on the body that the flap on the lid slides into is heavily worn. The lining is very good showing very little wear.
