Description:

Marked "ALLEN & WHEELOCK. WORCESTER. MASS. U.S. / LLEN'S PT'S. JAN. 13. DEC. 15, 1857. SEPT. 7 18" on the left side on the barrel. The serial numbers match on the frame, cylinder, cylinder pin, loading lever, grips, and probably the bottom of the barrel, although that was not removed to check. The quantity of these made has always been estimated at around 700 but this figure is far below the number that would be expected based on surviving specimens. Note the variation in the barrel marking due to different placement of the rolling dies. The front sight is a brass blade on a dovetail base, the rear a notch in the nose of the hammer, The loading lever also acts as the trigger guard. It is retained by a latch in the center of the spur behind the trigger.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus, with traces of the original blue finish. Most of the surface has turned a gray patina with hints of brown and scattered spotting, with the blue in the protected areas. Some silvering has occurred on the casehardened parts, with bright original case color still visible. Some minor dings and handling marks overall. Grips are very good, with signs of hammering and varnish loss on and around the butt, along with some pressure dents. Action is excellent.
