Manufactured circa 1863-1875, this was one of the major handguns of the Civil War. The Remington New Model Army was the primary revolver issued to the Federal cavalry after the fire at Colt's factory in 1863. The top barrel flat is marked: "PATENTED SEPT. 14. 1858 / E.REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. NEW YORK. U.S.A / NEW-MODEL". The serial number is located on the bottom barrel flat and left side of the frame under the grip, both match. Small single letter "W" inspection mark on the left barrel flat, "J" on the left side of the frame, a "W" on the right side of the frame and lug and on the cylinder. Pinch blade front sight and grooved top strap. Casehardened hammer and brass trigger guard. The grips are smooth varnished without cartouches.

Rating Definition:

About fine as altered (with exceptions noted below). Approximately 50% original blue finish remaining with the balance a smooth gray patina. There is some light spotting on the barrel. The left side of the hammer shows bright case colors. The cylinder has a smooth dark patina with dings between the nipples and the grip straps have a smooth gray patina with several minor gouges on the backstrap. The grips are altered with a moderate chip on the right toe and left heel. The lower edge on each panel have been carved in an attempt to round them off and there is grinding on the bottom of the frame. Markings are clear, with exception noted above. The action is tight.
