Description:

This is a very nice example of a rare and desirable Springfield Armory Model 1899 Krag "Constabulary" carbine that has been assembled from a standard 1899 Carbine to resemble to a Philippine constabulary carbine. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL 1899. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 227832". It has the later pattern 1902 style rear sight that is adjustable to 2000 meters with the late pattern peep sight on the rear of the aperture. The stock has had the cleaning rod slot filled in and shortened to the correct Constabulary length. There is a script proof in the pistol grip area with two sub inspector numbered proofs but no cartouche on the left side. Upon carefully inspecting this carbine it is our opinion that it was an original 1899 Carbine barreled action that had been installed in a correctly modified field replacement or Constabulary style stock. The sights do not carry the correct "C" marking on the left side of the base and the front barrel band has not had the bayonet lug modified for the later style bayonet. Upon removing the barreled action from the stock there is an area of light corrosion and blue loss on the underside of the barrel this would have been caused by the barreled action being inside a standard carbine stock for an extended period of time. Consequently, it is our opinion that this is an assembled carbine being made up from an 1899 Carbine.

Rating Definition:

Arsenal refurbished overall with the receiver mainly having turned a silver gray patina. Side cover still has very nice mottling which is just beginning to silver. Magazine cover has turned a plum brown patina. Bolt assembly has a nice even original polish with much of the bright blue on the extractor. The barrel bands retain approximately 95% of the original blue finish and are just starting to show signs of light browning in some areas. Trigger guard assembly retains approx. 60% of the original blue turning plum around the screws. Buttplate retains about 50% original blue with some evident touch-up. Buttstock appears near mint on the outside and brand new on the inside with just a couple of minor scuffs and very sharp finger grooves. Upper hand guard is the long-wood type commonly used on 98 rifles and 99 carbines and is in excellent condition though not matching in age or color with the stock. Mechanically fine.
