The receiver and hammer have a casehardened finish and the barrel and furniture are "arsenal bright". The right side of the receiver is marked with the eagle and shield above "U.S./ SPRINGFIELD/ 1872" in three lines. The opposite side of the receiver is marked "MODEL 1871". The top of the upper tang is marked "REMINGTONS PATENT/ PAT. MAY 3rd, NOV 15th 1864, APRIL 17th 1866". The heel of the buttplate is marked "U.S." above the buttplate screw. The left side of the wrist of the stock has the script initials of the final inspector "ESA" stamped in an oval with ("period graffiti") "tHt W.M.C." scratched in. The blued folding leaf rear sight is graduated to 900 yards. Complete with cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with some hints of a light brown patina on the arsenal bright finish. The frame has turned a silver patina, with solid remnants of the original casehardened pattern. Some minor handling marks and spotting are visible overall. The stock is near fine, with two heavy pressure dents on the right side, lighter dents and chipping on the forearm and minor dings and scratches overall (also initials carved on left side of wrist, see above). Action is excellent.
