Description:

Manufactured in 1937, the third year of production and chambered in the very rare 219 Zipper caliber. The 219 Zipper is listed as one of Winchesters "non-standard chambering" for the Model 70 rifle, page 30 of "The Model 70 Winchester 1937 - 1964" by Dean Whitaker. It is believed that the non-standard chamberings were for experimental purposes or to special order, however very few were ever sold to the public. Each side of the barrel is marked with the standard Winchester markings as well as "---219 ZIPPER---" on the left side just ahead of the rear sight. The Winchester proof appears on the left side of the receiver and breech end of the barrel and "WINCHESTER / ---TRADE MARK---" on the left side of the receiver wall. The front sight is a hooded ramped blade and the rear sight has been removed. The top of the barrel just ahead of the rear sight slot and the top of the chamber have been drilled and tapped for scope mounting. The left rear side of the receiver is also drilled and tapped for receiver sight mounting. All metal parts are blue with a polished bolt. The safety is mounted on the top rear of the bolt assembly, the floorplate is hinged and the trigger serrated. One piece checkered pistol grip stock with a checkered steel buttplate and sling swivel studs removed. Each side of the buttstock is marked in 1/2" stenciled yellow paint marking "219 ZIPPER" leading writer to believe this rifle was chambered for experimental purposes rather than a special order. The trigger guard is marked with a silver circle at the front and a white paint line with orange over the top of it.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle retains 97% of the original finish with some thinning on the trigger guard and minor dings on the floorplate. The stock is very fine overall with some varnish loss and a few minor pressure dents and dings. The underside in front of the floorplate has pressure dents on each side. Adding in the dings on the floorplate, it appears as though the rifle was rested on a hard object while firing. The checkering remains very crisp. The buttplate retains 97% of the original finish with smooth gray patina on the heel. All of the markings are crisp. The action is excellent. An extremely rare pre 64 Model 70 in 219 Zipper. Writer has never seen another Model 70 in this caliber. This is the rarest of the rare!
