U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1819 Hall Breech-Loading Percussion Conversion Rifle

The Hall Rifle is an extremely significant U.S. military firearm. The Model 1819 Rifle was the first breech loading military arm produced in large quantities and adopted as a regulation weapon by the U.S. This Model 1819 Rifle has a "1831" dated breechblock and pin-fastened barrel bands. The breechblock is marked: "J.H. HALL / H. FERRY / US / 1831" in four lines perpendicular to the bore. The barrel, receiver and furniture have a brown finish and the breech is casehardened. Steel ramrod with a button head and the front sight doubles as a bayonet lug. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The rifle was converted to percussion by grinding the pan flush with the top of the breech, adding a musket nipple in the old flash hole and installing a new hammer with a percussion top. This particular rifle is the Type II transitional conversion having the old style spur release device for the breech block. Approximately 4,200 of these rifles were converted 1841 - 1842

ConditionArsenal refurbished/converted to percussion. The rifle retains approximately 70% of the original brown lacquer finish with wear on the muzzle end of the barrel from putting on and taking off a bayonet. There is some thinning on the barrel and receiver. The barrel bands are beginning to darken and retain most of the original finish. The otherwise crisp stock is broken and repaired rear of receiver. Otherwise, there are a few minor dings, pressure dents, scratches and handling marks. The breechblock markings are crisp. Mechanically fine.
