Description:

James Accles was a key member of the Gatling organization and not only served as the company's European representative, but was responsible for a number of improvements in the design of the Gatling Gun, one of which included the "Accles Positive Feed", adopted in 1883. Accles went on to form his own company and developed a "Gatling Type" machine gun of advanced design that used a trigger mechanism, unlike the Gatling which used the crank firing mechanism. The trigger operated a clutch that engaged or disengaged the two gears, thus controlling the fire of the gun. Accles model was very similar in appearance to the Model 1883 Gatling gun. This drum magazine is for the 45-70 cartridge and constructed of polished brass and steel. The brass front and back cover plates have tracks soldered to inner surfaces. A propeller wheel located between the plates is rotated by cogs on the barrel unit. The cartridges which lie in slots of the propeller are guided in a circular path through the tracks and into the gun. The top of the unit has a heavy brass ring for ease of handling. The magazine measures 12 5/8 inches in diameter and 3 inches thick and weighs approximately 21 lbs.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The brass, for the most part, retains its attractive luster with scattered minor aging. There are a few solder repairs on the seams and a few small and a moderate dent on the side. The mechanism works properly. Few of these ever hit the market as they are usually always with the guns and not for sale.
