Description:

1) Four vintage copies of the Saturday Globe of Utica, dated April 23, 30, May 21 and 28, 1898. Color images on the front page depict a Massachusetts Regiment marching through Boston, a Marine raid on Cienfuegos to destroy a cable, a camp at Chickamauga, and a political cartoon depicting Spain as a wild dog about to get run off by a musket-wielding Uncle Sam. 2) A copy of Harper's Weekly, dateline New York, Saturday, May 14, 1898. With a picture of "COMMODORE/ GEORGE DEWEY U.S.N." on the front page and several full page images and a 2-page spreads relating to naval action and images of personalities on both side of the conflict. 3) The Admiral Dewey 10 ½” white china plate has "CORONO VENIET DELECTIS" at top, the dates of Dewey's promotions around the border, the Flagship Olympia on the top half of the center and Dewey in the bottom half with a banner reading "YOU MAY/ FIRE GRIDLEY/ WHEN READY" and a reproduced signature. 4) Dewey figural pipe head is made of salt glazed clay with a metal ferrule on the half stem. 5) Two Dewey souvenir trays. First: 5 ¾” diameter tin tip tray with entire face decorated with chromolithograph (color picture) of Dewey with sea scene in background, bordered with looping rope and stars, eagles and cannon. Reverse is a green grey finish. Very good showing some wear. It is a rare occasion when this tray is found, and this one excels most encountered in condition. Second: 3 3/8” diameter tin tray with litho portrait of Dewey surrounded with red/white/blue flag motif.

Rating Definition:

1) In good condition, with foxing along the edges and some tears at the folds. The margins of the April 23 edition were used for computation. 2) Very good, with minor wear and light stains. 3) In excellent condition. 4) In very good condition, with a few small chips and minor wear. 5) Both in very good condition, with some light spotting.
