Description:

This is a early pattern trapdoor carbine as manufactured by Springfield Armory. These carbines were the primary cavalry carbine from the post-Civil War era up through the late 1890s and saw service through out the Indian Wars until the adoption of the Krag carbines. This late pattern carbine has the Buffington rear sight that is fully adjustable for wind age and elevation, the hooded integral front sight base and blade, the three click tumbler, Springfield lock, the low arched color casehardened breech block marked "1884", two piece trigger guard, serrated trigger and late style buttplate with the trapdoor. Saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the stock. The rear of the barrel is correctly marked with the "V/ P/eagle head/P" proof and the lock plate is correctly marked "US/SPRINGFIELD" next to the US Eagle. The side of the stock has a boxed "SWP/1889" cartouche and a script circle "P" proof in the grip area. It is complete with the original three piece cleaning rod and headless shell extractor inside the buttstock compartment.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel is mostly an even brown aged patina showing only some minor handling marks. The breech block shows faint but distinct traces of case colors but has mostly silvered out on the high points and turned to a dark mottled patina on the balance. The lock plate is now a mottled dark patina with spotting. The wood has been revarnished and has minor repairs with two on the right side of the buttstock at the wrist and one on the underside in front of the trigger guard as well as scattered pressure marks and scratches.
