Description:

The final variation of the Springfield Trapdoor; the Model 1888 Rifle represented yet another attempt by the Ordnance Department to introduce the never-popular rod bayonet on the standard service rifle. The Model 1888 Rifle saw extensive service with state volunteer units during the Spanish American War and subsequent Philippine Insurrection and was still in service with the militia and National Guard when the United States entered WWI, rifles in this serial number range could be found in various volunteer Infantry units in New York. This later (1892) production Model 1888 rifle features the ramrod bayonet, one piece trigger guard, serrated trigger and butt compartment with the original cleaning rod. The barrel is fitted with the Buffington rear sight with precise wind age and elevation adjustments and a fixed front sight. The rifle has a blue finish with casehardened breechblock and barrel tang. The stock is oil finished black walnut. The lock plate is marked with the standard eagle/shield motif and "US / SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The front of the low arch breechblock is marked: "U.S / MODEL / 1884". The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V / P / eagle head / P" proof and "A" inspection mark just ahead of the receiver. The left stock wrist is stamped with the "SWP/1891" final inspection mark in a rectangle. A circled script "P" proof mark is stamped behind the trigger guard. Accompanied by what appears to be the original leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Fine. Approximately 60-70% original blue finish remains on the barrel exhibiting slight spotting and some scattered isolated patches of pin prick pitting. The breech block and upper tang show solid traces of original case colors. The side plate is now an even mottled gray patina with a few patches of darker spotting. The wood is very fine with scattered pressure marks and scratches with some newer dings on either side of the buttstock. All markings are crisp and clear. The leather sling is excellent with flex cracks.
