Description:

1) S.A.W. Photo Album. Includes 32 original sepia toned paper prints, roughly 2 x 3” taken during the S.A.W. showing troops marching, in huge camps, and various activities. Location unknown. Fascinating and very rare. Too small to show fine details. Many of the troops wear kepis. There are 59 additional photos of misc. subjects. 2) Grouping of correspondence from a pair of brothers, G.D. and R.B. Vickers in Company D of the 1st Montana Volunteers. Roughly 13 letters each, along with a set of 16 "business" cards for members of the unit, each having a colored flag at left plus picture of ship with motto “Remember the Maine”. Contents of the two brothers’ letters is logically almost identical. In summary, the letters cover organizing the unit, in camp, travel to San Francisco, camp and drill there, transport to Philippines, dull boring life, then a space of no letters from when they were in combat, then a couple reports of battle, talk of discharge. In good to very good condition, with mild foxing and staining. 3) A soldiers prayer book, titled "The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church" by the Oxford University Press, 2 7/8” x 4”, 582 pages, dated Jan 1, 1898. Canvas bound with impressed gold American flag and red page edges. According to the consignor, this book came from an estate where it was claimed to be the property of Wilkes Madison, descendant of James Madison and great-nephew by marriage to the deceased. In very good condition, with light wear.
