This is an exceptional example of an original unaltered Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that was manufactured in 1886. These were the primary US rifles until the advent of the Krag rifles. This rifle has all the mid to late features such as Model 1884 Buffington rear sight that is adjustable for both wind age and elevation, a blade front sight, the two piece trigger guard and trigger bar assembly, three click tumbler, serrated trigger, low arch breech block and smooth buttplate with no trapdoor. The rear of the barrel is correctly marked with the "V and "P" proofs over the eagle head proof and the top of the breech block is marked "US /MODEL/ 1884". The lock plate is marked with the large American Eagle next to the "US SPRINGFIELD" and the top of the buttplate is marked with the large "US". It has the correct full length military stock. On the left side of the stock is the single boxed cartouche with "SWP/1886" inside and a single circled script "P" proof in the pistol grip area.

Excellent overall with approximately 98% original blue finish on the barrel with only some minor scratches and nicks with most of the wear on the muzzle end where a bayonet was attached. The breech block and tang have a solid 98% plus vivid original case colors just starting to thin out on the firing pin hump and sharp edges. The lock plate and trigger also have a solid 98% blue finish just showing a couple of very minor rub spots on the side and top spur of the hammer and edge of the locking latch. The buttplate also has 90% of the original blue with just some wear on the heel area. Almost all the screws on the various parts have sharp edges indicating that they have not been buggered or removed. The stock is also in excellent condition with a clear sharp cartouche and "P" proof with some minor handling marks overall and light pressure dents or scratches in some areas from light use.
