This is an example of one of the 8000 M1864 Joslyn breech-loading carbines purchased by the Ordnance Department form the Joslyn Fire Arms Company of Stonington, Connecticut . The carbine has the casehardened iron mountings and hooded firing pin that distinguish the Model 1864 Carbine from the brass mounted Model 1862 Carbine. The carbine has a blued barrel and oiled walnut stock. The barrel is fitted with a two-leaf, folding, rear sight, (short leaf missing). The lock plate is marked: "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO. / STONINGTON / CONN" ahead of the hammer. The rear of the breech block is marked with the 1861 and 1862 patent dates and the serial number "9832" is located on the top of the breechblock and the top of the receiver tang. The sub-inspector initials "F.D.L.." are stamped on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. Two small script-letter Ordnance inspection marks with rectangular borders are stamped on the left stock flat. The heel of the buttplate is marked: "US".

Rating Definition:

About good. The barrel, trigger guard and hammer have a smooth dark patina with strong original blue finish on the barrel and hammer. The lock has a smooth gray patina and the buttplate a smooth brownish patina. There is some scattered light spotting on the barrel. The stock has been revarnished retaining some of the varnish and having a small area on the right side forearm sanded, a 2 inch splinter missing on the right rear at the buttplate and a few overall minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
