USMC Unertl telescopic sight with original anodized duraluminum mounts and was manufactured by the J. Unertl Optical Co., of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The 8-power telescopic sight has a 1 1/4-inch objective lens with medium cross wire, center dot, reticule and target type mounts with 1/4 minute adjustments. The scope has a blue finish and the mounts are anodized black with case-hardened base screws. The scope tube is roll-engraved: "J. UNERTL/USMC-SNIPER/2327" in three lines just ahead of the eyepiece. The top of the eyepiece is marked with the magnification: "8". The telescopic sight is accompanied by the second pattern, micarta (fiber) olive green scope can. The Unertl 8 power target telescopic sight was selected by the Marines as the sight for the Springfield M1903A1 sniper rifle adopted in 1943. The Marines purchased approximately 1500 "USMC-SNIPER" telescopic sights from Unertl numbered from 1000-2500. Unertl equipped M1903A1sniper rifles were used in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Many of the Unertl "USMC-SNIPER" telescopic sights were subsequently fitted on USMC Winchester Model 70 rifles and used by Marine snipers during the early years of the Vietnam Conflict.

Excellent. The telescopic sight retains at least 95% of the original dull blue finish. Wear is limited to minor scratches on the sides of the tube caused when the telescopic sight was returned to battery after firing. The optics are excellent. All of the markings are very sharp. The black anodized duraluminum mounts retain 80% finish, faded to a bronze tone. The micarta scope can has about 95% of the original olive green finish with edge wear on the bottom and top and minor storage scratches on the can body.
