Description:

This Colt U.S. contract Model 1902 revolver is referred to as the "Alaskan" or "Philippine" model due to the distinctive oversized trigger guard. Approximately 4600 of these revolvers were purchased by the Army to provide a large caliber replacement for the .38 caliber New Army Model DA revolver. The revolver has a blue finish with black checkered hard rubber bird's head grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the tops. The butt is fitted with a lanyard loop. The right side of the frame is stamped "U.S." below the cylinder and dated "1902" behind the trigger guard. The initials "J.T.T." are stamped on the right corner of the frame above the grips. The Ordnance sub inspector's initials "R.A.C." are stamped on the rear face of the cylinder, on the left front of the trigger guard bow and on the left rear of the frame above the grips. There is a "P" firing proof on the rear face of the cylinder and on the underside of the barrel. The full serial number, "46249" is located on the bottom of the grip strap and the partial serial number "6249" is located on the rear face of the cylinder and on the loading gate. The left side of the barrel is marked "45 COLT", the top of the barrel is marked: "COLT'S PT F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." and a small encircled Rampant Colt trademark is located on the lower left rear portion of the frame. The accompanying factory letter confirms the revolvers configuration, except grips which are "Not Listed" and that it was shipped as 1 of 50 to the Commanding Officer at the Springfield Armory, Springfield, Mass on August 29, 1902. As featured in the Renaud de Kerchove D' Ousselghem collection.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall. The revolver retains approximately 97% of the bright original high polish finish with high edge wear, a number of minor dings and scratches on the frame and some scattered minor spotting. The backstrap is a mix of blue finish and smooth brown patina and the front strap is thinning showing speckles of brown. The grips are a pleasing brown and are in excellent condition with minor wear, a few minor dings and crisp checkering. All of the markings are clear. The action is fine.
