Description:

This is a U.S. model 1896 Krag carbine manufactured in 1897, original and unaltered. This model made famous by being carried by Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders at San Juan Hill in 1898, the stories this gun could tell. The receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL 1896/SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" followed by the serial number. It has the correct barrel length with the fixed blade front sight and tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 yards, correctly marked with "C" on the side, the metal sight protector/barrel band is in place. The stock has the saddle ring and bar on the left side and the short handguard. On the left side is a boxed "JSA 1897" cartouche and a circle "P" proof in the pistol grip area just behind the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Good with none of the original finish remaining. Most of the metal parts are a light gray patina. The stock has a rich brown finish with character dings and dents from usage and handling. Two fine cracks are running back into the stock from the rear of the trigger guard with another small crack running from the magazine cut out under the bolt. Mechanically fine.
