A) U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag Rifle

Description:

This is an example of the last version of the Krag produced before the transition to the Springfield M1903 rifle. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S. / MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY." next to the serial number. It is fitted with a tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards, original brass muzzle cover, sling swivels, bayonet lug and trapdoor buttplate. Straight grip military style stock with finger grooved forearm and short length hand guard that has a boxed "JSA / 1900 cartouche on the left side with a circled script "P" proof mark in the pistol grip area behind the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Partially refinished with traces of blue finish on the barrel and a smooth silver and green patina on the barrel bands. The receiver, trigger and trigger guard retain mostly an artificially aged smooth silver patina. The stock is very good with some minor nicks and minor scratches. The stock markings are clear.

Description:

The stock, unlike the earlier Model 1896 and Model 1898 Carbines, has no provision for a sling bar and ring and a 2 inch longer stock. This rifle is equipped with a hooded blade front sight and a tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 yards. The left side of the receiver is marked: "U.S. / MODEL 1899. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY." in front of the serial number. The high gloss stock is unmarked and fitted with a metal trapdoor compartment buttplate containing a three-piece cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Partially refinished (stock) with the barrel and barrel band retaining traces of the original blue finish with a mixture of smooth silver and gray patina. The receiver, trigger and trigger guard retain approximately 20% blue finish exhibiting heavy areas of smooth gray. The stock is sanded and heavily revarnished with a couple of gouges, some minor pressure dents, some minor nicks and scratches. The action is fine.

Very good with traces of original blue finish remaining with mixture of smooth brown and silver patina on the barrel and barrel bands. There are heavy traces of blue on the receiver and loading gate mixed with a smooth silver patina. The trigger guard has been worn bright with small traces of blue finish mixed with a smooth brown patina. The buttplate is heavily nicked. The action is fine. The stock is good with some minor scratches and nicks and a couple of minor pressure dents. The stock markings are faint.
