Description:

This was the most plentiful of all the Colt percussion revolvers with approximately 325,000 produced from 1850 to 1873. The top barrel flat is marked " ADDRESS SAML COLT / NEW YORK CITY" in brackets and "COLTS / PATENT" is marked on the left side of the frame. Blue barrel and cylinder, silver plated square trigger guard and backstrap, and casehardened hammer, frame and loading lever. Stagecoach hold up scene roll engraved on the cylinder and walnut smooth grips. Spurious square back trigger guard configuration that has also been renumbered to the accepted serial range. This revolver is pictured in "THE WILLIAM M. LOCKE COLLECTION", page 71, third plate.

Rating Definition:

Refinished partially, renumbered, and altered (trigger guard changed from round to square back configuration) with the barrel retaining approximately 90% of the blue finish with small light handling marks and light edge wear. The loading lever has slight traces of case color mixed with a smooth silver patina. The frame and hammer exhibit a smooth silver patina. The cylinder has moderate traces of very faded blue with some pin prick pitting that does not distract from the overall clear engraving. The brass retains approximately 50% of the bright silver plating mixed with aged brass and dark silver. The grips are fine with most varnish and some minor handling marks.

B) Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver

Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 204
Class: Antique
Description:

This was the most plentiful of all the Colt percussion revolvers with approximately 325,000 produced from 1850 to 1873. This revolver was manufactured in 1859. The top barrel flat is marked "ADDRESS SAML COLT / NEW YORK CITY" in brackets and "COLTS / PATENT" is marked on the left side of the frame. The revolver had a blue barrel and cylinder, silver plated trigger guard and grip frame, and casehardened hammer, frame and loading lever. Stagecoach hold up scene roll engraved on the cylinder and walnut smooth grips. All serial numbers match including partial serial number "4364" on the loading lever. The wedge is very tight and the writer did not want to force it out to check for a number.

Rating Definition:

Good, with the metal surfaces exhibiting a mottled dark and silver patina. The brass retains approximately 40% of the silver plating. The cylinder engraving is about 90% visible. There is a 2 inch surface chip on the left grip, other wise the re-varnished replacement grips are good with light varnish flaking and minor handling marks. The action functions, but is slightly out of time. From the Will Hoffeld Collection.
