Dated 1856, with a blade front sight, 3-leaf folding rear sight, "V/ P/ eagle head" on the barrel, "1855" on the tang, "1856" on the lock plate, with cleanout screw, standard Springfield markings, and the eagle on the Maynard primer cover. A faint cartouche is visible on the grip, with a iron swivel ramrod, brass fittings, "4" numbered buttcap and hardwood stock with brass hardware and sling swivel.

U.S. Simeon North Model 1819 Flintlock Pistol
Dated 1821 on the lock plate. The pistol has iron mountings, swivel steel ramrod and oval rear sight on the barrel tang. The lock has a unique sliding safety bolt located behind the hammer and a detachable brass flash pan. All of the fittings are iron and the stock is oil-finished black walnut. Lock plate is marked with an Eagle and Shield between "U" and "S" in front of the hammer. "S. NORTH" is stamped in a downward arc above the eagle and "MIDLtn CONN." is stamped in a upward arc below it. The left side of the barrel is stamped with "JDJ / P / US" proof and inspection marks. Condemnation indent present on left side of barrel (usually confirms original flintlock configuration). The grip straps extend to the rounded steel buttcap.

Produced between 1817 and 1820. Brass blade sight on the split barrel band, with the breech marked "P/ US" and the backstrap going clear from the breech to the buttcap. Markings on the lock plate are fading, with the "S" of "U S" and "MIDLn CON." legible. Smooth grip with a hickory ramrod, iron trigger guard and buttcap.

Dated 1847 on the lock plate and barrel tang. Half moon front sight on barrel with swivel-type ramrod. Two Percussion Arms
This is an example of a British New Sea Service percussion pistol manufactured circa 1844. The pistol was one of many manufactured with conversion flintlock parts from late flintlock muskets. The pistol features a 9 7/8 inch, .50 caliber, smoothbore barrel with an iron ramrod with trumpet head. The pistol has a brass trigger guard, left side plate and buttcap with iron parts remaining. The lock plate is stamped with the "crown / VR" behind the hammer and "TOWER", "crown / broad arrow" and "1844" in front of the hammer. The left rear of the barrel is marked with two crown over scepter proof marks and a "16". The barrel tang is marked "6 L / 249", the left side of the barrel band is marked with a "WL" and an "H" in a circle. The left stock flat is marked with a "CP".

Belgian Proofed Military Single Shot Percussion Pistol
Several parts are marked with "crown/ AF" proofs (Auguste Francotte of Liege, Belgium). In addition, the barrel has a "C in shield" proof and the "E/ L G/ star" Liege proof house stamp. Barrel is unmarked other than the "AF" proof. A steel backstrap connects the barrel tang to the brass buttcap, which is fitted with a sling swivel, and the single barrel band connects to and shares a screw with the brass reverse plate. Smooth pistol grip, with "3/ 6" on the underside ahead of the brass trigger guard, a shield proof on the left side, and an iron front strap.

French Model 1822 Pistol martially converted to percussion ignition in 1854. Stacked bead front and fixed rear sights on the barrel and tang, with dates and other stampings. Matching Set of Double Barrel Percussion Pistols
Single bead sight on a solid rib. With the exception of the serial number, there are no visible maker's markings (possibly Belgium in origin). Double Damascus barrels have been cut to there current length of 8 1/4 inches. Floral engraved lock plates with zig zag line border. The floral engraving continues on the upper tang and trigger guard and hammer sides. Fish sculpted hammers, double triggers, checkered grip, ornamental buttcap and iron ramrod. With a matching pistol marked with the same serial number.

Two French Flintlock Pistols
Called the "A La Mandrin" and known as the poor mans North & Cheney, this French Model 1777 flintlock pistol features a 7 1/2 inch smooth bore 75 caliber iron barrel made without sights, iron hammer, frizzen, spring, backstrap and trigger, brass frame with a 6 3/8 iron belt clip attached to the bottom just behind the trigger, brass trigger guard, flash pan and butt cap. Iron ram rod with a flared tip which fits at an angle into the right front of the frame. There is a "crown / A" proof mark on the frame just behind the flash pan and an "82" on the left rear of the barrel. No other markings are visible. Mounted with a one piece stock and no forearm. The North & Cheney Model 1799 was patterned after this pistol.

This large flintlock pistol has no visible markings and features a 12 3/8 inch smooth bore 70 caliber barrel, engraved lock and hammer, brass blade front, brass trigger guard with decorative finial, relief chiseled brass buttcap extending up the sides of the grip area and brass ramrod ferrules with a false ramrod (part of the stock). No visible maker markings and features an engraved lock, hammer and brass trigger guard, open scroll engraved brass side guard, raised ornamental brass buttcap, curled trigger and decorative brass thumb plate. There are three proofs on the barrel with a very faint 2 1/2 inch rear wedge of decorative engraving. U.S. Martial Flintlock Pistol
This pistol has the Model 1816 pattern stock and barrel and 1841 dated lock plate with mostly illegible stamping forward of hammer with "C.S." marking. (writer believes this to be spurious). The front strap has the double band and the backstrap extends to the buttcap. The ramrod is hickory with a swelled tip and is absent of the threaded metal ferrule on the other end. All iron mountings and brass flash pan. The barrel is marked "P" and "US", the lock markings in front of the hammer are covered by moderate pitting and behind the hammer is marked "MIDDTN / CONN / 1841".

Marked "US / I.N. JOHNSON" on the lock plate in front of the hammer, "MIDDTN / CONN / 1853" vertically at the rear. The date on the barrel tang cannot be read and the left rear of the barrel is marked "US / SK / P". Brass mountings, blade front sight, swivel type steel ramrod with a button shaped head and mounted with a one piece walnut stock with "LK" and "WAT" cartouches and a brass buttcap. Approximately 10,000 of these pistols were manufactured 1853-1855.

U.S. Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol by Robert Johnson
This .54 caliber, smoothbore, flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut between 1836 and 1844. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol. The pistol has an 8 1/2 inch round barrel with a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings. The barrel, ramrod, butt cap, barrel band and trigger guard were once "bright". The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened. The lock is marked "U.S. / R.JOHNSON / MIDDNCONN / 1843" below the brass pan. Inspection and proof marks "JH / P" are stamped on the left rear of the barrel. The left stock flat is marked with two oval cartouches. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican War.

Rare Circa 1780 East India Company Marked Fusil
This is an excellent example of a Brown Bess style Fusil . The Fusil follows the general pattern of the Brown Bess Tower Musket but has lighter, smaller components. The top of the rear section of the barrel has a partial date of "1779" over "MOORE" and below that it has the East India Storekeepers mark of the "Heart Shaped Shield", quartered by a diagonal cross with the initials; "V.E.I.C." Of the "United East India Company. Directly below that it has the standard Crown over intertwined "CP" proof mark/Crown over "DM" and Crown over "V" proof marks of the Birmingham proof house. The Side of the lock also has the same "1779" and "MOORE" markings as the barrel and it also caries the same East India Storekeepers mark of the Heart Shaped shield, quartered by a diagonal cross with the initials of "V.E.I.C." and it is fitted with the standard goose-neck hammer. It has the standard brass India pattern furniture with the round side plate, with the trigger guard being held on by three screws with a single hole in the front of the trigger guard bow for a sling swivel with the rear potion being solid. The barrel is held on by two cross-pins and there are three brass ramrod thimbles. Directly over the front thimble is a single bale sling swivel. It is fitted with the correct India pattern walnut stock that is approximately 49 1/2 inches long from buttplate to the front cap and it has the small bulbous grip area around the bottom thimble. The top of the grip area has the small silver unit plate held in place with a single nail that is unmarked.

Harpers Ferry Armory Muskets And Carbines 1817 Musket 69
Harpers Ferry Armory manufactured an unknown quanity of these 36 inch barrel, Model 1816 style muskets between 1817 and 1821. The musket has a distinctive 36 inch barrel and a stock that is about 5 5/8 inches shorter than the Model 1816 musket. The lock plate is marked "HARPERS / FERRY / 1819" vertically behind the hammer and has the eagle/shield marking above "US" between the hammer and the detachable brass pan. The barrel is dated 1820 and has the "V / P / eagle head" proofs on the left side, with three illegible markings on top. The walnut stock has three barrel bands, two sling swivels and "US" marked buttplate. The left stock flat has a script cartouche and is marked "V / PH". This is the only example of this rare musket ever offered by Rock Island Auction Company.

Scarce U.S. Nippes Model 1816 Flintlock Musket with Bayonet
Model 1816 Type III Flintlock manufactured by D. Nippes. Nippes manufactured approximately 1600 Model 1816 Type III Flintlock Muskets in Mill Creek, Pennsylvania from 1837-1840. The musket is in original flintlock configuration with the barrel and triggerguard, 'National Armory Bright', the lock is case-hardened and the stock is oil finished black walnut. The lock is dated "1838" vertically behind the hammer and marked "US / D. NIPPES / PHILA" in below the flash pan. The barrel tang is dated "1839". The left side of the barrel is stamped "US" / LF / P". The script cartouche is stamped in an oval on the left stock flat. The musket has the characteristic Model 1816 low comb stock and ball-shaped sling swivel reinforcement on the trigger guard. "15" marked on the buttstock and "US" on the buttplate tang. Most Model 1816 Flintlock muskets were converted to percussion and original flintlock examples are scarce. With 16 inch long bayonet marked "US / EB" on the blade and "G/b." flanked by "16" and "45" on the socket.

French Flintlock Fusil
This is a very nice example of an original unaltered early 1800s French flintlock musket that was made at the French arsenal at St. Etienne. This pattern of musket is almost identical to the US Model 1816 musket. It features a 40 inch round barrel with an earlier military style lock, similar to the 1795 or 1807 locks with flat edges with the small teet on the rear of the lock, with the reinforced hammer and iron flash pan. The side of the lock plate is marked, "E. Chapon Saine/a St. Etiene". It has the standard full length walnut musket style stock with all iron mounted furniture with three wide barrel bands, with a blade front sight mounted on the front band. The underside of the barrel has a small stud for a bayonet. It has a higher comb similar to the 1812 pattern muskets and it is fitted with a pair of sling swivels, mounted on the front of the trigger guard and the middle barrel band. It is complete with steel ramrod with a trumpet shaped head.

Springfield Armory U.S. 1816 Musket 69
The Model 1816 Musket was the primary infantry long arm during the Mexican War. This musket was coverted to percussion by Hewes and Phillips of Newark, New Jersey e. 1861-62. It has the bolster type percussion conversion, fixed blade front sight and three leaf rear sight (one leaf is broken). The lock plate is marked "SPRING / FIELD / 1832" vertically behind the percussion hammer and the "eagle / shield / U.S." marking in front of the hammer. The stock is the correct full length military version with no visible markings. The side of the bolster is marked "H&P". "US" marked on the buttplate tang, "S" marked side plate and "DP" marked ahead of the trigger guard with "P / eagle head" proofs on the left side of the barrel and "1862" on top. It has a replacement iron trumpet head ramrod. A good example of a Civil War percussion conversion musket.

U.S. H. Deringer Contract Model 1817 Flintlock Musket
This is a very good example of a U.S. Model 1817 musket that was manufactured by Henry Deringer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deringer produced approximately 13,000 of these muskets. The Deringer produced muskets had notable differences between the Springfield manufactured Model 1817s such as the trigger plate without the pistol grip projection and the sling swivel mounted on the trigger guard. The center of the lock plate is marked with a large "US" over "H. DERINGER / PHILADA". There are no visible manufacturer dates. The top of the barrel is marked "GF / P / US". Blade front and notch rear sights, three barrel bands, patchbox and iron ramrod with brass tip. The left stock flat is marked "F" and a period carved "BSB" (the "S" is backwards) on the left side of the buttstock.

Tower Brown Bess Musket 79
Introduced for infantry service in 1768, the Short Land Pattern musket was the standard arm of the British armies until 1797. Bayonet lug front sight, with a thin tang groove. No legible markings are visible on the barrel or lock plate. Smooth straight grip stock, with a brass tip, ramrod, four ramrod pipes, brass trigger guard with accented finial, long brass reverse plate, flat butt and a shield on top of the wrist marked "44/ K/ No6". Though not confirmed, the "44" on the wrist shield is believed to denote the 44th Regiment of Foot, AKA Long's Regiment and the East Essex Regiment, which was active in the Colonies during the French-Indian war (where they were involved in Braddock's Expedition/ Defeat and the Battle of Carillon) and the Revolution (participating in the battles of Brooklyn/ Long Island, Brandywine, and Monmouth). Later, the Regiment would participate in the Napoleonic Wars. Though introduced too late for French-Indian War use, this musket could have been issued before the outbreak of the American Revolution.

London Barnett Swivel Mounted Percussion Blunderbuss
Marked "BARNETT/LONDON" on the lock plate in front of the hammer, "BARNETT/ GUNMAKERS/ LONDON" in an oval cartouche on the right side of the stock. "W.R" is stamped on the stock opposite the lock and the London "crown/ V" and "crown/ GP" proofs are on the upper left rear of the barrel, which has a blunderbuss-type muzzle which flares out to nearly 3 inches wide. A ten inch iron yoke is fitted to the forearm in front of the lock plate, most likely used on ship. The heavy iron trumpet headed ramrod has a single brass pipe. The buttplate and trigger guard are also brass.

Fine Brown Bess Third Model Flintlock Musket with Bayonet
This is a fine example of an original military proofed Third Model Brown Bess Musket. Bayonet lug front sight and shallow groove rear sight, with a "crown/ GP/ arrow" and four other proofs on the upper left side and "crown/ 14" on the tang behind the screw. This is an example of the Model 1861 Type I Musket manufactured from 1819 to 1822. Marked "HARPERS / FERRY / 1819" vertically at the rear of the lock plate with the eagle/shield above "US" between the hammer and the pan. The left side of the barrel has the "V / P / eagle head" proofs and the barrel date 1819. The top of the barrel is marked "A / b / 74". U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1816 Flintlock Musket
This Type III Model 1816 musket was manufactured in 1833. The Model 1816 Musket was the primary infantry long arm during the Mexican War and many muskets were converted to percussion in the 1850s. They were extensively issued by both the Federal and Confederate armies during the first two years of the Civil War. This musket has a National Armory bright finish. The lock plate is marked "SPRING / FIELD / 1833" in three vertical lines behind the hammer and "eagle/shield/U.S." stamped beneath the brass flash pan. The barrel tang is dated "1833". "P / eagle head / V" proof followed by "8". The stock is the correct full length military version. The left side stock flat has two circular script cartouches ("EG' and "SWP") and two stampings behind the trigger guard plate ("NM" and a script "JS" cartouche). The buttplate tang is marked "US" and "A / 19". Has the iron trumpet ramrod and leather sling.

Fine U.S. Pomeroy Model 1840 Flintlock
A scarce example of one of the 7000 U.S M1840 Flintlock Muskets manufactured by Lemuel Pomeroy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts between 1840 and 1846. The musket is 'National Armory Bright' and has an oil-finished walnut stock. The lock plate is convex behind the hammer and flat with beveled edges in front of it and has a detachable brass pan with high fence and a hammer with the distinctive circular opening in the center. The side plate is the distinctive narrow pattern also used on the M1842 Musket. The bayonet lug is located on the bottom of the barrel. The musket is fitted with a trumpet-shaped iron ramrod. The lock plate is stamped "1844/U.S." in two vertical lines behind the hammer. A eagle and shield motif above "L. POMEROY" is stamped in front of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1844". "U.S./ESA" and an indented "P" proofmark are stamped on the upper left side of the barrel perpendicular to the bore. The left stock flat is stamped with a script/oval "HB" sub-inspector's mark and a script, oval "WAT" final inspection mark. Small "B" sub-inspection marks are present on the stock and barrel. The Model 1840 Musket was the last standard production model of a regulation U.S. flintlock musket.

Scarce Owen and Edward Evans U.S. Contract 1808 Flintlock Musket
Scarce example of the 2128, 1808, Harpers Ferry pattern flintlock muskets manufactured by Owen and Edward Evans of Montgomery, Pennsylvania between 1808 and 1812. The musket is finished 'National Armory Bright' and has a black walnut, Harpers Ferry pattern, low comb, stock. The lock is flat with beveled edges and a distinct tip and the end. The lock has an integral iron flash pan with high fence and a flat-faced hammer with reinforced cock. The stock has three band springs located behind the barrel bands. The trigger guard has pointed finials and a stud for the lower sling swivel. A bayonet lug is attached to the bottom of the barrel. The iron ramrod has a button tip. The lock is stamped "EVANS" vertically behind the hammer and has a spread eagle standing on "US" in an oval in front of it. The top of the barrel is stamped "U.S." perpendicular to the bore and has a small "S.N.J." (New Jersey) marking stamped parallel to the bore. An indented oval, "Eagle Head / CT", proofmark is stamped on the left side of the barrel. Few Evans manufactured muskets have survived.

Model 1816 Flintlock manufactured by Brook Evans in 1824 at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The Type II Musket has a browned barrel and bands, casehardened lock with detachable brass pan and a low-comb walnut stock. The lower sling swivel is mounted on a stud in front of the trigger guard bow. The lock plate is rounded behind the hammer and is flat with beveled edges ahead of it. The hammer is rounded with a reinforced cock. The musket has an iron ramrod with button head. The rear of the lock is stamped with the vertical date: "824" and the initials "B.E.". A eagle and shield motif surrounded by *B. EVANS* VALLEY FORGE is stamped in front of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1824" and the left side of the barrel is stamped with the and inspection mark, "LS", over and indented "P" proof followed by "U.S.". The left stock flat is stamped with a "V" inspection mark and an illegible, oval, inspection stamp.

U.S. Model 1808 Contract Musket from the lot of 4270 Springfield Armory pattern muskets manufactured by Elijah and Asa Waters of Sutton, Massachusetts. The musket is finished "National Armory Bright" with a oil finished walnut stock with high, fluted, comb. The lock plate is pointed at one end and has an integral iron flash pan. The hammer is flat-faced with a reinforced cock. The trigger guard has rounded finials with the lower sling swivel mounted on a separate stud. The barrel bands are secured with springs located below the bands. The lock is stamped with the horizontal date "1812" behind the hammer and a eagle and shield motif with "US" in an oval above "SUTTON" in front of the hammer. An oval, indented, proofmark is stamped on the upper left side of the barrel and two deeply indented inspection or property marks are stamped on the lower left side of the barrel just above the stock line. A two-letter inspection mark is located on the left stock flat.

These Cadet Muskets were made from 1851-1853 and utilized the small Model 1847 Musketoon lock. A total of 4000 of these scaled-down muskets were manufactured and issued to various cadet organizations including the famous Virginia Military Institute (VMI). The lock plate is marked "SPRING / FIELD / 1852" in vertical lines behind the hammer and is stamped with the eagle and shield above "US" in front of the hammer. The left side of the barrel has the "V / P / eagle head" proofs, "1852" on the upper tang and "US" on the buttplate tang. Fixed blade front sight/ bayonet lug and folding rear sight on a barrel marked with "V / P/ eagle head" proofs on the upper left side. The lock plate is dated 1865 with "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" and an eagle with shield ahead of the hammer. The barrel bands are marked "U". Pomeroy L Conversion Musket 69 bore
Marked with a slightly fading "1842 / US" vertically behind the hammer, eagle and shield motif over "L. POMEROY" in front of the hammer, the barrel tang is marked "1842" and the left rear of the barrel is marked "US / [illegible marking / P". The musket has converted from flintlock to percussion using the Belgian style or "cone" type conversion. These conversions were performed by U.S. arsenals from the 1840s to the late 1860s after the final decision to stop all flintlock production was made in 1842. Has the original iron ramrod with a trumpet style head and the iron buttplate is marked "US" and "28" on the tang. The left stock flat is marked with two cartouches, two illegible markings on top of the buttstock, "JF" behind the trigger guard and "28" near the upper tang.

Manufactured circa 1700, this rifle is marked " LIEGE" on the left lock and "BOSSET" on the right lock. There are gold inlaid scroll and floral patterns on the rear and muzzle end portions of the barrels and concave rib. There is a blade front sight mounted on the rib about 3 1/2" from the muzzle. All iron mountings, double hammers and triggers, wooden ramrod with brass tip and half stock with decorative checkered wrist and iron buttplate.

Ketland Marked Double Barrel Flintlock Fowling Piece
This trade musket is marked " Ketland / & CO" on the lock plates and the concave rib is marked "LONDON". This firm operated in Birmingham, England from just after the Revolutionary War until the death of one of the partners, John Ketland, in 1816. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th century. This was originally made as a flintlock and has probably been shortened as early trade guns tended to be longer. No visible Birmingham proof marks at the rear of the barrel. The trigger guard and buttplate are brass. Wooden ramrod with ivory tip. The ramrod tube on the forearm is a replacement.

Spanish Double Barrel Shotgun 16
This Spanish shotgun features a single brass bead sight on the concave solid rib. The rib and barrels toward the breech have platinum inlaid vine designs as well as around the breech end of the barrels. The left barrel is platinum inlaid "DE HERRADURAS", the rib "POR YGNACIO ALBERDI EN EIBAR" and the right barrel "ANO DE 1856". The hammers, locks and trigger guard are lightly scroll engraved. The stock is checkered in the wrist with carved extension, cheekpiece, floral design carving behind the cheekpiece, wooden ramrod, sling swivels and cupped iron buttplate with compartment.
