Description:

Introduced for infantry service in 1768, the Short Land Pattern musket was the standard arm of the British armies until 1797. Bayonet lug front sight, with a thin tang groove. No legible markings are visible on the barrel or lock plate. Smooth straight grip stock, with a brass tip, ramrod, four ramrod pipes, brass trigger guard with accented finial, long brass reverse plate, flat butt and a shield on top of the wrist marked "44/ K/ No6". Though not confirmed, the "44" on the wrist shield is believed to denote the 44th Regiment of Foot, AKA Long's Regiment and the East Essex Regiment, which was active in the Colonies during the French-Indian war (where they were involved in Braddock's Expedition/ Defeat and the Battle of Carillon) and the Revolution (participating in the battles of Brooklyn/ Long Island, Brandywine, and Monmouth). Later, the Regiment would participate in the Napoleonic Wars. Though introduced too late for French-Indian War use, this musket could have been issued before the outbreak of the American Revolution.

Rating Definition:

Poor. A mixed dark brown and gray patina is showing on the barrel and lock, with pitting and spotting. The tang has been welded back together. Stock is poor, with a number of cracks and chips and signs of later varnishing. The front half of the forend has been added back as in evidence by the visible line in two places.
