Harpers Ferry Armory manufactured an unknown quanity of these 36 inch barrel, Model 1816 style muskets between 1817 and 1821. The musket has a distinctive 36 inch barrel and a stock that is about 5 5/8 inches shorter than the Model 1816 musket. The lock plate is marked "HARPERS / FERRY / 1819" vertically behind the hammer and has the eagle/shield marking above "US" between the hammer and the detachable brass pan. The barrel is dated 1820 and has the "V / P / eagle head" proofs on the left side, with three illegible markings on top. The walnut stock has three barrel bands, two sling swivels and "US" marked buttplate. The left stock flat has a script cartouche and is marked "V / PH". This is the only example of this rare musket ever offered by Rock Island Auction Company.
Fine. The musket is in original flintlock configuration and is completely original. The metal surfaces have a smooth dark brown patina. There is some minor flash pitting around the flash hole. The stock is very good with some minor dings, dents, chips and scratches. There are two small chips missing from around the upper tang and a 1 inch chip on the right stock flat. The left stock flat has had two inches shaved off the bottom edge. The markings are clear. This is a good and completely original example of Harpers Ferry Model 1817 Artillery Musket.
