Description:

Harpers Ferry Model 1816 Flintlock Musket manufactured in 1837. The musket has the distinctive low comb walnut stock, case-hardened lock with detachable brass flash pan, and browned barrel. The rectangular bayonet lug is located on the top of the barrel and the musket has an iron, button-head, ramrod. The lock plate has a flat, beveled front and rounded rear and rounded hammer with reinforced cock. The lock plate is marked: "HARPERS/FERRY/1837" vertically behind the hammer and has an eagle and shield motif over "U.S. in front of it. The barrel tang is not dated and the barrel lacks the usual proof and inspection marks. The lower sling swivel mount has been removed from the trigger guard bow,

Rating Definition:

Good. The musket appears to be in the original flintlock configuration. The barrel and barrel bands retains most of the brown finish. The casehardened lock has a dark patina. The barrel may be a period replacement. There is moderate flash pitting on the lock and on portions of the barrel adjacent to the flash hole. The stock is in good overall condition with moderate handling wear. The lock markings are legible. This is a good representative example of an important U.S. flintlock that was the primary shoulder arm of the Mexican War and which saw extensive service in the first year of the Civil War.
