Description:

Hammer notch rear sight and front blade front sight on a Colt Dragoon shaped barrel marked "ALBERT KAPP / SISTERDALE TEX". During the American Civil War, Alfred Kapp of Sisterdale, Texas, manufactured Confederate revolvers at his father's (Dr. Ernst Kapp) farm. It is believed that prior to the war, Alfred Kapp worked at the Hartford Colt factory, giving him the experience needed to design a revolver with many Colt characteristics. Six revolvers are known to have been produced, with the one known survivor on display for many years at the Sophienburg Museum in New Braunfels. The men known to have worked on the guns included Alfred Kapp, Herman Kemmerling, Adolph Muenzenberger, Rudolph Wipprecht, and brothers Carl, Rudolf and Johann Coreth (see, for example, William Gary's CONFEDERATE REVOLVERS, pages 160-163). History does not record an Albert Kapp as working on the revolvers. Furthermore, the design of this revolver does not match the Sisterdale Company revolvers. The Sisterdale revolvers are known to have a closed frame. This revolver has an opened frame and matches the design produced by the Austrian company Kaiserliche-Koniglicke Priviegierten (KKP). From 1849-1854, the KKP produced around 1,000 licensed copies of Colt percussion revolvers with both Dragoon and Navy features, many issued to the Kriegs-Marine (Imperial Austrian Navy). This revolver has the similar KKP scroll engraved cylinder with rope front and rear borders, and rounded stop notches and wedge design. Floral engraved rear side of frame with the right side having been grounded, possibly erasing the KKP Innsbruck address marking. The left side of the frame has an illegible marking. The right side percussion cap cut-out has been enlarged with the addition of a large left side percussion cap cut-out. The backstrap is marked with an illegible marking, possible a date or serial number. Fitted with smooth one-piece grips.

Rating Definition:

Poor, with the metal surfaces heavily pitted. The engraving is slightly visible. The barrel marking is clear. The loading lever is broken but is complete. The grip is poor with a few heavy gouges, some moderate-heavy scratches and some minor nicks and chips. Mechanically needs work. From the Will Hoffeld collection, from Marc Walz.
