Description:

Produced mainly in Belgium, the term "Brevete" can be applied to any revolver made in Europe under license by Colt using one or more of their patents. This revolver features a percussion shield cut-out without the capping groove, rounded hammer, a brass bead sight, brass round trigger guard and backstrap. The top barrel flat is marked "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY" in white and "COLT / BREVETE" marked on the bottom flat. The cylinder is roll engraved with a slightly different Naval Battle scene than present on a Colt manufactured Model 1851 and is marked with the Liege "ELG" in an oval proof under a "crown/U" proofmarking. The cylinder face is marked with the maker's name "N / GILON". The area above the wedge on the right side is marked "CBLT" and a "crown/U" proof is marked on the left with a number "2" below the wedge. "COLTS/PATENT" is marked on the left side of the frame. The full serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, backstrap, cylinder, and trigger guard. Included is a copy of a 1973 dated letter from Fort Carson Antiques-Guns, Inc. listing this revolver for sale.

Rating Definition:

Very good with a dark mottled patina on the barrel mixed with traces of bright original blue finish around the screw heads and wedge and the rest of the metal surfaces exhibit a smooth silver-gray patina. The brass retains strong mounts of silver plating on the top of the backstrap and the area around the trigger guard mixed with a smooth aged brass appearance. The cylinder engraving is clear and sharp. The grips are good with some minor handling marks. Mechanically very good. Provenance: Chris Anderson and Will Hoffeld Collection.
