Barrel: 4 inch octagon
Finish: blue/casehardened/silver
Grip: walnut

Item Views: 531
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 207
Class: Antique
Description:

Approximately 24,000 of the Model 1862 Police and Pocket Navy revolvers were converted to cartridge between 1873 and 1880. This particular revolver was originally manufactured in 1861, the first year of production. The frame is machined at the recoil shield and is fitted with a conversion plate that is notched for the rimfire firing pin. The rebated cylinder has been altered by cutting off the breech end but leaving the teeth. The loading lever has been removed and an ejector rod and housing mounted on the right side of the barrel. The top of the barrel is marked "ADDRESS COL SAMLCOLT NEW-YORK U S AMERICA" . The cylinder is roll engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene. The left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S / PATENT and "36 CAL" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard shoulder. The serial number, "3893" is located on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, and the partial number "893" is marked on the cylinder. Manufactured concurrently with Colt's advanced design metallic cartridge revolvers, the Model 1862 Police/Pocket Navy Conversions were produced at least partly to make use of over produced percussion revolver components.

Rating Definition:

Good as altered. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with some minor pitting scattered overall. The barrel has been cut down to the current 4 inches and the muzzle artificially aged. There are a few minor dings on the barrel, including the muzzle. The brass has an a pleasant aged patina and the front of the trigger guard shows some grind marks and some battering. The grips are very good with a series of minor scratches on the upper right side just behind the frame, otherwise only light handling marks. The loading lever hole has only been partially filled. The cylinder scene is visible. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is very good. From the Will Hoffeld Collection.

B) Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver, Non-Factory Cartridge Conversion

Manufacturer: Colt
Model: 1851 Navy
Type: Revolver
Gauge: 38 CF
Barrel: 7 1/2inch octagon
Finish: blue/casehardened/silver
Grip: walnut
Stock:
Item Views: 531
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 207
Class: Antique
Description:

Manufactured in 1863 and subsequently converted to 38 centerfire cartridge by, more than likely, a blacksmith of the time. The rear of the cylinder has been removed, the chambers bored out and less than a 1/4" plate has been crudely attached to the back of the cylinder. A firing pin has been added to the hammer and the recoil shield cut out for a loading port. The loading lever has been removed and the area where the lug swivel attached to the lug is filled with the hinge screw remaining. The top of the barrel is marked with the U.S. America address, the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS / PATENT" and the left trigger guard shoulder is marked "36 CAL". The matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The number "0479" has been re-stamped (not in the proper place) on the cylinder. Fitted with smooth one piece walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Poor as crudely converted to cartridge with the metal surfaces having a brown patina with some minor pitting and abrasive marks on the lug. There is some minor pitting on the recoil shield, some minor dings and the same abrasive marks on the frame. There is a hole in one of the cylinder stops than has worn through. The brass has an aged patina. The grips are poor, a large chip on the left toe, lower edge wear and overall minor dings and dents. The cylinder scene is visible. The action needs work, the cylinder does not turn when the hammer is cocked. The markings are clear. From the Will Hoffeld collection.
