Description:

This Model 1861 Navy revolver was manufactured in 1864. The back strap is crudely inscribed "Cap J Peak, Co A 7th M.S.M.1864" and "A B P 1887" on the butt. Except for the "ABP" the inscription is a bit crude and appears period. The consignor reports that Captain Peak was a member of the Missouri State Militia, that the revolver was given to Peaks brother Andrew B. Peak in 1887 and that he purchased the revolver from the grandson of Andrew Peak. The top of the barrel is marked "ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA" , the left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S / PATENT", the left side rear of the trigger guard is marked "36 CAL" and the cylinder is roll engraved with the Naval battle scene. The serial number on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap all match. Partial serial number "7258" is marked on the cylinder and the wedge is number 01365 (mismatched). Fitted with one piece smooth walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Refinished. The metal surfaces have a smooth artificial brown patina. There are a number of moderate dents in the top of the barrel, a few on the cylinder and some small dings around the wedge. The cylinder scene is weak, but visible. There are strong traces of the original silver plated in protected areas of the trigger guard. The grips are good with a hand rubbed patina, a chip on the left toe and upper right side, some wear and nicks on the lower edges and minor dents and dings overall. A portion of the barrel marking is obscured by the dents, otherwise the markings are clear. The consignor reports having work done to the action (most likely refinished at this time) in 1971. From the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased from grandson of A.B. Deak on May 8, 1971.
