Description:

Manufactured from the mid 1860s to about 1872, these revolvers in earlier years were called the "Model of 1853" and are now more correctly called the "Pocket Model of Navy Caliber" or just "Pocket Navy". This is an example of a factory conversion for the .38 centerfire cartridge. The rear of the cylinder has been cut off and a breech plate without a loading gate and hammer centerfire firing pin have been added. There is no ejector housing or ejector rod. The top of the barrel is marked "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO / HARTFORD CT U.S.A.", the two-line July '71 and '72 patent marking is on the left side of the frame and "36 CAL" on the left trigger guard shoulder. The 5-shot rebated cylinder is roll engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene. Matching serial number on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and backstrap with the partial serial number (7735) marked on the cylinder. The frame, trigger guard and backstrap are marked with the suffix letter "L". The wedge is unmarked. Fitted with the rarely encountered iron trigger guard and backstrap.

Rating Definition:

Fair with the metal surfaces exhibiting a dark mottled patina. The slightly ill-fitting replaced and revarnished grip is poor with some minor scratches and a few light gouges. The cylinder engraving is partially worn smooth. The markings are beginning to fade. From the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased from Francis C. Gow III in Las Vegas (June 1989).
