Description:

Manufactured in 1929, the accompanying letter verifies the serial number, caliber, barrel length, blue finish with grips "Not Listed" and that it was shipped to W.M. Hudson, address unavailable as 1 on March 20, 1931. There are two factory letters with the revolver one dated Sept. 3, 1986 and the other April 21, 1969, both with the same information. Also with the revolver is the original Abercrombie & Fitch bill of sale dated April 2, 1931 to Mr. W.M. Hudson. The bill of sale lists the correct serial number, order number M2031, received date 3-31 for one "Single action Colt revolver 7 1/2" Bbl. Cal. 44 S&W Spec. with additional cyl. (44-40) Spec. ordered No#2 engraving with gold bands, deluxe blue fin. Ivory stocks, carved bullhead". At the time special order Colts were placed through dealers such as Abercrombie & Fitch, who then ordered from the factory directly. Wilson M. Hudson was a professor of English at the University of Texas and became interested in Andy Adams' writings and life when he started teaching a course on life and literature of the Southwest in 1950. Andy Adams lived through the last days of the open range and then wrote about them in books and novels that were so full of authentic detail that he was plagued all of his life by the refusal of critics to regard them as fiction. Hudson wrote the new biography "Andy Adams: His Life and Writings" and at some point in time dedicated this revolver to Adams' memory. The revolver features floral scroll engraving on the barrel, front sight, ejector housing, frame, cylinder flats and backstrap. There are shell patterns on the recoil shield, loading gate and top of the backstrap. The trigger guard bow and forward portion of the trigger guard, and the top strap have a zigzag and dot pattern. There is a gold inlaid band around the muzzle and two around the rear of the cylinder. The barrel has the standard one line barrel marking, "COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY 44 SPECIAL" on the left side and the two line, three patent dates followed by the Rampant Colt on the left side of the frame. The revolver is fitted with two piece ivory grips with a steer head carved on the left panel and gold Colt medallions. Complete in an Abercrombie & Fitch oak case with royal blue satin and velveteen lining with an extra 44-40 cylinder engraved exactly like the cylinder on the gun and the compartment lid has a label which reads "DEDICATED / To The MEMORY / Of / ANDY ADAMS / Cowboy & Storyteller Of The Plains / W.M. HUDSON" with a cowboy on horseback herding steers. Also accompany this revolver are three books by Andy Adams, "The Corporal Segundo", "The Outlet", and "Why The Chisholm Trail Forks", numerous letters of correspondence, copies of newspaper articles and documents regarding Hudson and Adams, a few photos and a 50 count box of Winchester 44 Smith & Wesson Special cartridges and a 50 count box of Winchester 44-40 cartridges.

Rating Definition:

Near mint in the case with only slight handling marks and a faint staggered drag line on the cylinder. The extra cylinder shows a very faint drag line, light handling marks and a minor ding. The grips are excellent having aged, mainly the right panel, to a pleasant patina and showing hairline age cracks concentrated mainly on the bottoms. The case is near new inside and out with only a few light handling marks on the exterior. It doesn't appear as if this revolver has spent much time out of the case.
