Description:

This early pattern Merwin Hulbert Second Pocket revolver with exposed cylinder pin, sliding loading gate, and scoop type cylinder flutes. The two line Merwin Hulbert & Co address appears on the left side of the frame and the "38 CAL" marking is on the right side. The revolver is nickel plated with a casehardened trigger and hammer. The top of the barrel is marked "HOPKINS & ALLEN MFG. CO. NORWICH CONN. U.S.A. PAT. JAN. 24 / APR. 21. DEC. 15.74. AUG.3.75 JULY 11.76 APR.17.77 PATS. MAR.6.77". The revolver features the distinctive Merwin diamond and scroll/punch dot engraving with a floral and leaf pattern on the sides of the frame. A panel depicting a song bird on a branch is located on the left side of the frame behind the cylinder. The serial number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip, the rear face of the cylinder and the inside of the barrel lug. The barrel release is a bar on the bottom of the frame which pivots to release instead of sliding. The grips are checkered black hard rubber with a scallop border and dogs head at the top.

Rating Definition:

Excellent (with the exception noted below) overall with 95% of the original nickel finish. There is some scattered light spotting and some major battering in the flutes of the cylinder. The grips are very good with some flattening of the checkering. Seven notches have been filed in the left grip. Mechanically sound. A very unique revolver.
