Description:

Manufactured circa 1865 by J. Harder in Kock Haven, Pennsylvania. Caliber .45 over approximately 16 gauge. Harder began his career as a gun maker in Athens, Pennsylvania, in 1844. He moved to LockHaven in 1860, where he was active until 1874. He is listed in American Firearms Makers, by A. Merwyn Carey, and "The Pennsylvania-Kentucky Rifle", by Henry J. Kauffman. This gun has 32 1/2 inch octagonal barrels. Two metal-tipped hickory ramrods are mounted alongside the barrels (one is a replacement). The top of the barrel is marked " J. HARDER / LOCKHAVEN PA" and the locks, hammers, and barrel tang have light floral scroll engraving. Dovetailed brass blade front and fixed iron rear sights with a heart shaped tang peep sight, double set triggers and mounted with a straight grip stock with a decorative brass patch box, cheekpiece with silver inlay and brass buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good with much of the original thinning brown finish remaining. There are several dings/tool marks on the side barrel flats at the rear sight area and the rear ram rod tube on one side is marred at the rear. The brass has a dark aged patina. The stock is very good as freshened with scattered minor dings and dents. The markings and engraving are clear and crisp. The mechanics are fine. Purchased in Los Angeles, part of the Will Hoffeld Collection.
