Description:

The only markings on the rifle is ""C. PAULY / SYRACUSE N.Y." on the right upper barrel flat near the breech. The rifle is equipped with a 30 1/2" telescopic sight with silver ends. The top of the sight tube is marked "WmMalcolm / SYRACUSE, N.Y." The telescopic sight is mounted with a ring on the muzzle dovetailed to the barrel and a round base mounted on the upper tang. The round barrel has solid under rib, no forearm, and hickory ramrod. The rifle has a back-lock, decorative iron trigger guard and checkered straight grip stock with iron crescent buttplate with heel and toe plates. The consignor's notes state that the rifle was purchased from a gentleman from Aspen, Colorado in 1980 and reportedly is a Berdan's Brigade Civil War Union Army snipers rifle. Writer has no information to substantiate this claim.

Rating Definition:

Good with an even brown patina on the barrel. The telescopic sight is in good condition with cross-hair and fair optics. The lock has 30% thinning casehardened finish with moderate pitting in the area of the hammer. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The percussion nipple is a replacement. One of the ramrod pipes has separated from the rib and remains on the rod. The stock has been lightly sanded and is good. A small piece missing at the top of the lock that had once been professionally repaired. The checkering shows moderate to heavy wear. The action does not hold the half or full cock position.
