Description:

This is an excellent example of a U.S. property marked Colt Model 1908 .380 Pocket Automatic Pistol that was carried by Brigadier General George C. McDonald. General McDonald was promoted to Brigadier General on February 22, 1944. McDonald was a pilot and served in the European Theater during WWII. Photographs that accompany the pistol show him with Generals George Patton and Carl Spaatz as well as with aviator Charles Lindberg. The pistol has the Colt commercial blue finish and is fitted with checkered walnut grips inlaid with Colt medallions. The slide is fitted with a flat top rear sight and front sight with serrated face. The right side of the frame is roll-stamped: "U.S. PROPERTY" and has a Colt "64" inspection mark on the trigger guard bow. The left side of the frame has a small Ordnance escutcheon final inspection mark stamped behind the slide safety. The serial number, "136950" is stamped on the left side of the frame above the trigger guard. The Colt "triangle/VP" is stamped on the left trigger guard bow. The right side of the slide is roll-stamped: "COLT AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE.380 HAMMERLESS" in two lines below the ejection port. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped with two line Hartford address and 1897 and 1903 patent dates. The Rampant Colt trademark is located behind the serrations on the left side of the slide. The blued magazine is stamped: "CAL.380/COLT" on the floor plate. The pistol is accompanied by a russet leather General Officers belt, gold-plated belt and holster. The calf-skin lined holster has a gold plated brass snap and belt loop rivets. Also accompanying the pistol are seven photographs of BG McDonald and his General Officer promotion certificate. The group is complete with a notarized certificate that states it was purchased from BG McDonald's estate. This group was formerly in the Putnam Green Collection.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The pistol retains approximately 95-97% of the original blue finish. Finish loss is limited to minor holster wear on the edges of the slide. The grips are in generally excellent condition with one minor compression mark on the left grip. The markings are crisp. The General Officer belt and buckle are in excellent condition. The holster shows more use but remains in very fine condition. This is an excellent, identified General Officer Colt .380 Pocket Automatic Pistol with the original G.O. belt and holster.
