Union Switch & Signal "Lunchbox" or "Tool Room" Model 1911A1 Semi Automatic Pistol

This is an excellent example of a Union Switch & Signal Model 1911A1 "Lunchbox" or tool room pistol The name "Lunchbox" originated because it is completely void of proof marks and a serial number. Prior to the time of strict controls of firearms, these pistols were usually carried out of the factory in workers lunch boxes, a piece at a time and assembled at home for the "new owners" use, hence the common name. The more recent explanation was that these were sample pistols used when it was necessary to have examples of production pistols for educational or other purposes. The only visible marking is the "USS" logo on the left side of the slide. The pistol has the proper High Standard barrel and "L" marked blue contract magazine. The pistol has the Dulite finish with blue trigger and fitted with the correct Keyes Fibre grips and a lanyard ring on the heel. The small parts are checkered except for the slide stop which remains smooth. This pistol is photographed on page 264 of the book "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols", Volume II, by Edward S. Meadows.

ConditionExcellent plus. The pistol retains 99% of the correct original dulite finish with some wear on the left front of the slide, light edge wear on the muzzle end of the slide and a few scattered light scratches and scuffs. The grips are as new. The action is excellent.
