Description:

This is a nice example of an early production Pre-WWI Model 1911 Pistol as manufactured by Springfield Armory. These were made between 1914 and 1917 and were the only 1911 series of pistol made by a Government Armory. The right side of the slide is marked with the traditional Springfield Eagle and Shield motif located behind the ejection port and "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY." in front. The opposite side of the slide is marked in three lines: "PATENTED APR. 20,1897 / SEPT.9, 1902. DEC.19,1905.FEB.14, 1911 / COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO", "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY / U.S.A." in two lines. The Ordnance Corps insignia is located behind the slide serrations. The left side of the frame has the Ordnance Corps shell and flame insignia above the magazine release button and "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" located on the front. The serial number is located on the right side of the frame behind the slide stop hole. It has the standard diamond checkered pattern walnut grips. It has an unmarked checkered slide stop lever, with the early 1914 pattern checkered thumb safety along with the smooth main spring housing. The recoil spring cap and barrel bushing are all unmarked and the barrel is a early Colt version that is marked only on top with the small letters "P" and "H". The magazine is a WWII replacement that is marked with a single letter "S" on the lip of the floor plate.

Rating Definition:

Good overall with 5-10% of the original wartime finish remaining mostly in the protected areas. The grips are in good condition showing wear overall with a couple of small pressure dents in a couple of areas. The top of the slide and upper sides of the frame show areas of fine erosion and light pin-prick pitting, probably from actual use in the trenches and sitting in a holster after the war. A nice representative example of a scarce Springfield Armory M1911 pistol.
