Description:

Half stock percussion rifle with "CHAS. FOEHL/PHILA." stamped on the lock plate and the top barrel flat. "MADE FOR/A.J. PLATE/SAN FRANCISCO" is stamped on the top flat next to the maker's markings. The rifle has an octagon barrel with under-rib and turned muzzle. The rifle has set triggers and a German silver trigger guard with finger spurs. The wedge fasten stock has a cheekpiece and checkered wrist and is fitted with a German silver crescent buttplate, forend tip and wedge escutcheons. The barrel is fitted with a buckhorn sporting type rear sight with stepped elevation and German silver front sight blade. The wooden ramrod has a brass tip. The rifle probably dates from the late 1850s.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has a brown patina finish. The lock, hammer and barrel tang have a silver gray patina. The stock has been repaired in the wrist area, but otherwise good, with sharp checkering and minimal handling wear. The barrel, percussion nipple and hammer have minimal flash pitting. The lock and barrel markings are sharp. A solid example of a .40 caliber, half-stock percussion sporting rifle. From the Will Hoffeld Collection.
