Good with the metal surfaces exhibiting a dark mottled patina with smooth aged brass. The barrel marking is very faint. The revarnished grips are very good with some minor scratches and a couple of minor nicks. The action is fine. From the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased from J.S. White (Aug. 1956).

Catalog Page: 101
Class: Antique
Description:

The Cloverleaf has the distinction of being the first cartridge Colt. This Cloverleaf was manufactured in 1874. Correctly fitted with the distinctive 4-round cylinder. Half moon front sight integral with the barrel, which is marked "COLT'S HOUSE PISTOL / HARTFORD CT U.S.A." in two lines flanked by Maltese crosses. The Sept 1871 patent date is in the groove of the top strap. Silver finished brass frame with checkered spur trigger and hammer. Smooth varnished grips, ending in a bird's head butt.

Rating Definition:

Poor with the barrel exhibiting a dark artificial brown patina and the cylinder exhibiting a smooth dark patina mixed with the beginnings of a smooth silver patina. The brass retains slight traces of silvered out plating in the protected areas. The grips are fair. The action functions, but the hammer spring is weak. From the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased in November 1956.
