Description:

The Model 1889 was manufactured from 1889 to 1899 with this particular rifle made circa 1890. The receiver is engraved with nice floral scroll, simple bordering and an animal scene of two deer in a wooded scene in the center of the left side, much in the style of Ulrich. Between Conrad Ulrich and his son George, the two engraved guns for Marlin from 1881 to 1919. The top barrel flat is marked "MARLIN FIRE - ARMS CO., NEW HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / PATENTED OCT. 11, 1887. APRIL. 2, 1889" with pointing arrows on the top line, "32W" is marked at the breech, "MARLIN SAFETY" on top of the receiver and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. The rifle is equipped with a folding globe front, adjustable ladder rear sight and a short range tang mounted peep sight. The barrel was blue and the remaining parts casehardened. Mounted with extra fancy hand checkered American walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with an iron forend cap and crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel and magazine have a dark patina with a few scattered small areas of minor pitting on the barrel. The remaining metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with some minor pitting on the forend cap, lever and buttplate heel and toe. There is a separated, period replaced chip on the toe of the stock which is loosely attached to the buttplate by the added auxiliary screw, otherwise there are scattered minor dings and dents and crisp checkering. The barrel marking and engraving remain clear. The action is fine.
