A) Deringer Percussion Pistol with Gold Bands

Manufacturer: Deringer
Model: Percussion Pocket
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 44
Barrel: 2 inch
Finish: brown/casehardened/silver
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 919
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 111
Class: Antique
Description:

Though often produced in pairs, complete sets are seldom encountered on the collector's market today, due to attrition caused by the Deringer's status as a practical pistol for everyday carry and defensive use, and only a few can be found in the original finely fitted case with a full set of accessories. Brass blade and notch sights, with the "DERINGER/ PHILADELA" and "P" with zigzag sunburst markings on the breech, which has a pair of inlaid 18k gold bands at the front and rear edges. "K/K" is stamped on the underside of the breech plug and barrel, the latter showing Deringer's distinctive streaked finish, generated by his proprietary "bronzing" process. Fitted with German silver furniture. Deringer's address is repeated on the lock plate, with scroll engraving on the lock, tang, side of the hammer, accent and reverse plates, a panel on the trigger guard, with a scale pattern on the hammer top, sunburst on the fenced bolster, blossom patterns on the escutcheon and a pineapple finial. Checkered fancy walnut stock, with a triangular inlay on the Schnabel tip and a birds head butt, which is fitted with a scarce leaf-engraved German silver buttplate and a capbox with a floral engraved door. In a locking case, hardwood with black leather cover and a hinged carrying handle on the lid, and a deep burgundy velvet lining on the padded lid interior and the French-cut base, which has covered compartments in the upper left and lower right corners, and fitted spaces for both pistols and all components. Included with the pistols is a screwdriver, ebony handled and marked "C. STEEL" and "HUBER", casehardened single chamber bullet mold, numbered "60" near the sprue cutter, nipple wrench, ebony stocked with brass accents, powder flask, unmarked, 5" long, a small powder measure and a brass ramrod/cleaning rod with scale engraving patterns on the sides.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains nearly all of the brown finish. A mixed gray patina is forming on the tang, hammer and lock, with bright original case colors visible under the hammer. The grip is excellent. Silver is excellent, with some minor handling marks and a fine developing aged patina. Excellent case, with some mild external wear, concentrated on the high edges, a few small faded spots and dings on the velvet, which otherwise has a deep rich color. Mechanically excellent.

Grip:
Stock: walnut

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains nearly all of the brown finish. A tiny circle of pitting is visible under the hammer and the screw at the rear of the lock is chipped, otherwise the lock, hammer and tang show a mixed dark gray patina overall, with bright colors at the front of the lock plate. Some light dings and small patches of varnish loss are present on the grip, which is otherwise excellent with beautiful color. Silver is excellent. Mechanically excellent.
