Description:

Silver blade front and notch rear sights with a "P" in a starburst stamped in the upper left flat of the breech, "DERINGER / PHILADEL" on top and "MANd FOR/ A.J. TAYLOR & Co/ SAN FRANCo CALa" on the barrel flat, with a pair of silver bands bordering the breech plug. "DERINGER/ PHILADELa" is marked on the lock plate. Scroll engraving is visible on the tang, hammer, lock, bolster, accent plate, reverse plate, and trigger guard, with zigzag borders on the shield escutcheon and buttcap, acorn designs on the escutcheons and a pineapple on the finial. A number "6" has been stamped on the rear of the guard, matching a faint number on the left side of the hammer. Checkered stock, with a silver accent plate on the tip and a bird's head butt. Establishing himself in San Francisco in 1854, Mississippi-born Andrew J. Taylor's career was cut short when he was accidentally shot in the head by a customer who was fiddling with a Colt revolver on September 25, 1858.

Rating Definition:

Partially refinished and repaired, with a mended break on the upper tang and a crack in the trigger guard finial. A mixed brown and gray finish is visible on the barrel, with the brown strongest on the top flat and some flash pitting around the nipple. The lock, hammer and backstrap show a dark patina, slightly lighter in the protected areas. Repaired stock, with cracks on the left extending from the escutcheon and side plate, a chip under the hammer. Fine silver, with a few light handling marks. Mechanically good, regardless of the aforementioned condition, writer cannot recall of another TAYLOR agent marked Derringer we have offered for sale. Don't miss out.
