Description:

Established in Ohio in 1842, B. Kittredge would become a major arms dealer and, according to one source, "the first important wholesale house in established in the west.". This particular arm was made in Belgium, and marked for sale by Kittredge. German silver blade front and notch rear sights, with "B. KITTRIDGE & CO." in an arc over "CIN. O" on the top flat, a small Belgian proof on the upper right, and a pair of inlayed silver border bands on the breech. No makers marks are present on the lock, with engraving on the upper tang, hammer, lock, German silver accent plate, trigger guard, reverse plate, escutcheons, shield escutcheon and teardrop buttplate. Checkered hardwood stock with a birds head butt. This pistol is pictured on page 215 of Eberhart's book "The Deringer in America". Please note the Belgian proof, which is clearly visible in the right side view in the book.

Rating Definition:

Good. A bright gray patina is showing on the barrel, with a few hints of brown and scattered pin-prick pitting. The case colors have silvered out on the exposed areas, with hints of the original color in the protected areas. Silver is good, with a slightly yellow patina on the accent and trigger guard, bright on the other parts. Grip is revarnished, with a small hole in the tip for an inlay and minor handling marks. The action is fine.
