Description:

Reportedly the product of James E. Evans (1850-1872), only three arms of this configuration are believed to exist. Brass bead front and notch rear sights, with a floral pattern on the tang screw, scrollwork on the tang, and scroll engraving with punch-dot backgrounds on the left side of the breech plug and the sides and top of the barrel. A burst design is visible on the hammer screw, with floral patterns on the lock plate screws. Further scroll and punch engraving is present on the lock and hammer, on the sides of the grip in the areas traditionally occupied by the accent and reverse plates, on top extending from a pair of wavy borders around the tang and on the underside extending from then trigger guard to the tip. "HR" has been added to the stock on the right side next to the trigger guard. The stock is constructed from a trigger guard and two pieces of case silver fused down the center line, demonstrating the profile typically associated with the Philadelphia Derringer, right down to the checkered bird's head butt.

Rating Definition:

Very good. A mottled gray patina is visible on the barrel, with streaks of brighter color on the lower sides, a brown tint to the bottom, and scattered darkening and light pitting. Remnants of the original casehardened pattern are visible on the lock plate, with a mixed gray on the tang and hammer. Light scratches and mild dents are visible on the grip, which shows hints of a dark aged patina in the lower and protected areas. Worthy of a place of honor in any Derringer or Antique American arms collection.
