Description:

The Curry brothers, Nathaniel and John, inherited the arms business and Deringer agent status from their father Charles in 1863, and remained in operation until 1886, when they sold the firm to Charles Ladd. German silver blade front and notch rear sights, with a zigzag flanked "P" on the left side of the breech, "DERINGER / PHILADELA'' on top, and "N.CURRY & BRo/ SAN FRANCo CALA/ AGENTS" on the top flat of the barrel. The distinctive "bronzed" finish is clearly visible on the barrel, with a pair of silver bands at the breech. Deringer's address marking is repeated on the lock, with scroll engraving on the tang, hammer, lock, silver trigger guard, initial shield, buttplate, reverse and accent plates, scales on top of the hammer, blossom designs on the escutcheons, a burst design on the bolster and a pineapple finial. A cap box with hinged engraved door is present in the butt. Burl walnut stock, with a silver wedge escutcheon in the tip and a checkered birds head butt. A fine example of a high end agent marked Philadelphia Deringer.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The brown striping is clearly defined, with 95% original brown color and a few dings on the upper right side. A mixed gray patina has formed on the casehardened parts, with some rust on the bolster and traces of the original pattern. Silver is superb, with a beautiful dark aged patina, turned nearly black in some areas. Grip is very fine, with some flaking of the varnish, a knot ahead of the finial, and excellent grain. Mechanically excellent.
