Description:

Fixed blade and notch sights, with scroll engraving on the tang and breech with a pair of German silver bands at the breech. The hammer is decorated with a scale pattern on the spur, eyes on the head and scrollwork down the side. Matching scrollwork is present on the lock and silver trigger guard, with a stepped-down finial. Smooth escutcheons, accent plate, decorative reverse plate, shield escutcheon and teardrop buttplate. Checkered stock with Schnabel tip and bird's head butt. Though no makers marks are visible, this pistol appears to have been made by R.P. Bruff of New York, with a similarly decorated Derringer pictured under Bruff's listing on page 99 of Wilson and Eberhart's book, "The Deringer in America: Volume One".

Rating Definition:

Fine. A bright crisp gray patina is visible on the barrel, with some small areas of very light spotting on the sides. The lock plate has turned a mixed gray, with a dull brown on the tang and hints of bright color on the inside of the hammer and the protected area of the lock. Silver is fine, with a dark patina forming on the barrel accents and a mixed color on the rest of the components. A scratch is visible between the initial shield and tang, along with some scattered pressure dents on the otherwise excellent stock. Action is excellent.
