Description:

Manufactured from 1860 to the mid-1860s with approximately 20,000 produced. Approximately 12,000 were made on government contracts, while the balance of the sales were primarily civilian. Standard three line address and patent markings on top of the frame above the cylinder. The serial number is marked on the frame under the grips. There is the sub-inspector's initial "S" on the right side of the barrel at the breech and on the right side of the frame and "4 / B" on the backstrap. This unusual revolver employs Henry S. North's patent whereby the cylinder is first pulled to the rear by the large ring trigger, then rotated and moved forward to lock over the rear of the barrel. The hammer is cocked at the same time. The action is fired by pulling the upper more normal trigger. There is a post front sight and a slot in a screw, under the nose of the hammer when it is down, acts as the rear sight. Each grip panel is marked with "JTB" inspector initials.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel and frame retain approximately 40% of the original blue finish with a smooth brown patina. The loading lever housing retains most of the blue finish. The cylinder retains approximately half of the blue finish with a balance of smooth brown patina. There is gray patina on the high edges. The hammer, upper trigger and loading lever retain approximately 90% of the faded case color with a mottled gray patina on the trigger guard and smooth brown patina on the lower trigger. The lightly sanded and re-oiled grips have some mild dings and scratches, chipped toes and a minor chip on the right grip. The grips are slightly undersized. The grip markings are legible, but weak. The frame markings are clear and crisp.
