Description:

This is an example of a scarce WWII J. P. Sauer and Sohns M30 Nazi Luftwaffe survival drilling rifle. This actual drilling is accompanied by a hand written note from the son of the second owner who had purchased it from the original veteran after the war. The original owner claimed to have found it in a bombed out building in Germany after the war. The M30 Drilling was issued to Luftwaffe air crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater from 1941-43 to provide them with a high quality survival rifle in the event of a forced landing. They are a three-barreled combination gun; double barrel 12 gauge, over a 9.3X74R rifle barrel. It is amazing that during the war the Luftwaffe was still buying these super high quality, hand made drilling rifles. The right side of the butt stock and right side of the shotgun barrel are stamped with prominent Luftwaffe Eagle/Swastika insignia. A "Stick Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug. Commercial "Eagle/N" proof marks are stamped on the right receiver rail, the right side of the rifle barrel chamber and on both shotgun barrel chambers. Both shotgun barrels and the rifle barrel are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". The serial number; "337591" is located on the underside of the rifle barrel, on the left receiver rail and on the receiver tang. The partial serial number, "7591" is stamped on in inside of the forearm and all of the serial numbers match These drillings all have a Greener-type safety on the left side of the action. The sliding barrel selector catch is located on the receiver tang. Engaging the rifle barrel selector raises a folding, 100 meter, rifle rear sight on the barrel rib and engages the forward trigger for firing the rifle barrel. The front trigger can be pushed forward to activate a "single set" trigger. The shotgun has a commercial blue barrel, case-hardened receiver and trigger guard and oil finished, European walnut stock and forearm. The forearm and pistol grip are finely checkered. The stock has a small European oval cheek-piece and a case-hardened pistol grip cap. The drilling has restrained but high quality scroll engraving on the receiver and trigger guard, engraved screw heads and the Sauer logo on the bottom of the receiver. The black plastic butt plate is serrated with the Sauer logo in a circle in the center. The barrel has a matted rib with ivory front sight bead. The drilling was packed in a gray aluminum case stenciled: "Drilling M30/mit Munition und Zubehor/ce" in three lines on the lid. "ce" was the J.P. Sauer wartime manufacturing code. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling, ammunition, cleaning equipment and sling. A list of the case contents is stenciled in black on the inside of the lid. The case also contains a manual entitled "DRILLING M.30" dated "Juni 1941", three sections of the original shotgun/rifle cleaning rod, a 12 gauge, cotton, and wire bore swab, a wire rifle bore brush and five rounds of original 9.3 X 74R rifle ammo. The headstamp on the cartridges is marked "PS" at the top of the rim, with two stars, one on each side with the caliber at the bottom of the rim.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% of the slightly faded original blue finish overall with some minor wear, thinning and browning of the blue finish on the breech end of the barrels, where you would hold the gun if carrying it in the field. The action, trigger guard bow, forend metal and grip cap shows approximately 80% of the original case colors, slightly fading with age and light field use on the front end of the action/frame again probably where it was carried while in the field. The stock and forend both have a nice matching chocolate brown color with handling marks and scratches on the top of the comb, and underside by the toe area. The checkering on the pistol grip and side of the forend, still have sharp checkered diamonds with numerous handling marks and a few flat spots, probably from actual field use. The metal case retains 90-95% of it original green paint showing wear on the edges and corners with clear markings on top of the lid. Still a very nice example of a scarce prewar, matching J.P. Sauer & Sohns M30 Luftwaffe drilling, still contained in it's original case.
